Mit „Behind The Mask“ ist am 14. Juni die dritte Single aus dem Michael Jackson Album „Michael“ erschienen. Der Song entstand während der Aufnahmesessions zu „Thriller“ nachdem Qunicy Jones die Version des Yellow Magic Orchestra hörte. Michael und Quincy überarbeiteten den Song und machten ihn zu einer Jackson-Single, die es dann aber doch nie auf ein Album schaffte. Nun hat das Lied doch noch seinen Weg auf einen Silberling gefunden. Begleitet von einer tollen Videoaktion, die Fans in aller Welt einband.
Im Frühjahr 2011 wurden die MJ-Fans weltweit dazu aufgerufen im neuen Videoclip für die Single „Behind The Mask“ mitzuwirken. In einem großen Online-Casting konnte man sich um eine Rolle bewerben, als Publikum, Bandmitglied, als Sänger oder wie man MJ-Dancemoves zeigte. Mit einem Spiltscreen konnten die User dann ein eigenes Video mit der Webcam aufnehmen und hochladen.
Aus 103 Ländern gab es Einsendungen, die von Regisseur Dennis Liu (Metallica, Arcade Fire, „Mad Men“ etc.) verarbeitet wurden.
Dennis Liu: „Es war das aufregendste und lustigste Projekt, an dem ich je mitgewirkt habe. Es war eine große Ehre für mich und sehr bewegend zu sehen, wie viele Menschen aus der ganzen Welt es vereint hat, wie ihre Stimmen, ihre Tanzbewegungen und ihre Musik durch Michael Jacksons Spirit und Musikalität zusammengeführt wurden. Wir haben Einsendungen aus der Sahara und Venice Beach erhalten, von Berggipfeln und suburbanen Hinterhöfen. Auf einigen Einstellungen waren über hundert Menschen zu sehen. Und alle, die mitgemacht haben, haben großartiges Material abgeliefert.“
Erschienen ist das Video offiziell am 14. Juni und wurde via Facebook promotet, am selben Tag erschien auch die neue Single „Behind The Mask„, die man als Download via Amazon MP3 herunterladen kann. Hier gibt es das Video und auch den kompletten Songtext / Lyrics.
