Berühmt ist er als Sänger der US-Rockband „The Calling“ geworden: Alex Max Band startet nach Jahren unfreiwilliger Plattenpause voll durch – und der Erfolg geht dieses Mal von Deutschland aus. Der erste Eindruck überrascht. Alex Band – oder Alex Max Band, wie er sich in Deutschland aus urheberrechtlichen Gründen nennt – hat so rein gar nichts von einem zickigen Hollywood-Rockstar an sich. Man könnte ihn fast als zierlich beschreiben, nicht übermäßig groß – und quirlig. Sehr natürlich, offen und ohne Scheu erzählt er im Interview von seiner Vergangenheit bei „The Calling“, neuartigen Vermarktungsstrategien und was ihn mit Deutschland verbindet.
Das Feeling im Gasthaus „Hirsch“ in Finningen bei Neu-Ulm gefällt. „Das sieht aus wie eine Scheune. Ich komme ja aus Hollywood, da sieht man das nicht oft.“ Alex Max Band ist fasziniert vom rustikalen Ambiente der Konzertlocation mit jeder Menge Holzgebälk und Stroh an den Wänden. „Ich muss unbedingt ein paar Bilder davon machen für meine Familie!“ Der US-Sänger freut sich schon aufs Minikonzert mit nur knapp 200 Besuchern. „Bei den großen Shows gibt es immer so einen großen Abstand und Absperrungen, das mag ich nicht. Ich würde am liebsten alle Leute direkt vor die Bühne in Greifnähe holen.“ Natürlich hat der Bühnenprofi, der seit 15 Jahren – sein halbes Leben lang – Gigs spielt, auch schon die Kehrseite kennen gelernt: Übereifrige Fans, die den Künstler ins Wanken bringen oder ihm im Eifer des Gefechts den Schmuck von den Händen ziehen. „Ich nehme immer meinen Schmuck ab vor dem Auftritt!“ Was viele ärgerlich finden würden, amüsiert Alex Band eher. „Manchmal ziehe ich extra billigen Schmuck an, den können sie haben.“
Bekannt wurde Alex als Frontmann von „The Calling“. Deren Hit „Wherever you will go“ hat mittlerweile schon acht Jahre auf dem Buckel, wird aber immer noch häufig im Radio gespielt. Eigentlich, bekennt Alex, sei „The Calling“ schon keine Band gewesen. „Ich beschäftigte Studiomusiker für die Plattenproduktionen, und wenn ich auf Tour ging, stellte ich ein paar Jungs an und zahlte sie wöchentlich aus. Ich glaube, ich hatte vier verschiedene Gitarristen und drei Drummer.“ Das einzige feste Bandmitglied, Aaron Kamin, ging nicht mal mit auf Tour, arbeitete lieber im Hintergrund. Jetzt macht Alex ganz offiziell Karriere als Solokünstler – und bringt dennoch alle durcheinander: „Mein Nachname ist Band“, lacht er und freut sich irgendwie darüber, dass er auf diese Art ein bisschen Verwirrung stiftet. Eine eigene Gruppe vermisst er übrigens nicht: „Als Solokünstler kann ich alles machen, was ich will und wie ich will, das ist ein Stück Freiheit.“
Das war nicht immer so. Nach dem Ende von „The Calling“ schloss Band einen Plattenvertrag ab, doch bald schon wollte ihn das Label in eine Ecke drängen, in die er nicht gehörte. Mit Akon oder Timberland sollte er arbeiten, seine Musik dem Zeitgeschmack anpassen. Da wollte Alex raus aus dem Plattendeal. „Es hat fünf Jahre gedauert, dieses Album in die Läden zu bringen. Das Label wollte es nicht, und ich habe gekämpft, habe sogar Hunderttausende Dollar gezahlt, um rauszukommen und das Album mitnehmen zu können.“ Nach dieser Erfahrung gründete der Sänger sein eigenes Label. Dass ausgerechnet Deutschland zur Wiege seiner zweiten Karriere werden würde, war Zufall. „Ein Typ bei EMI Deutschland fand es toll, also haben wir hier angefangen – jetzt geht es um die ganze Welt.“
Auch wenn es ungewöhnlich klingen mag, dass ein US-Sänger seine Karriere in Deutschland startet – mit diesem Land verbindet ihn noch mehr. „Als ich acht war, ist meine Mutter nach Deutschland gezogen, und ich habe hier drei Brüder!“ Dass sich Arbeit und Privatleben nun so verbinden, findet Alex klasse: „Ich bin mit der hiesigen Kultur sehr vertraut, kenne das Essen und das Land.“ Aber am schönsten sei die Zuneigung der Fans. „In diesen fünf Jahren, in denen ich von der Bildfläche verschwunden war, weder auf Tour gehen noch Platten veröffentlichen durfte und ein Gefangener dieses Labels war, haben alle meine Fans gewartet. Vor allem die deutschen Fans. Und als die Musik dann veröffentlicht wurde, waren sie da. Das ist echte Treue. Und das ist eins von den Dingen, die ich am meisten an Deutschland schätze – in Amerika bist Du innerhalb eines Monats vergessen.“
Dass er nicht vergessen wurde, hat Alex allerdings auch sich selbst zuzuschreiben. Statt dazusitzen und Däumchen zu drehen, hat er dafür gesorgt, dass die Leute ihn nicht abschreiben. Er gehörte zu den ersten, die das Internet mit all seinen Möglichkeiten nutzte, um den Kontakt zu den Fans aufrecht zu erhalten. „In den fünf Jahren, die ich nicht spielen und nichts veröffentlichen durfte, konnte ich wenigstens Musik verschenken. Also schrieb ich ständig Songs und schenkte sie den Fans, hielt sie so gut wie möglich auf dem Laufenden. Während der „The Callling“-Zeit gab es noch kein Myspace, Facebook oder Twitter. Da haben wir angefangen, Message Boards einzurichten und Chatrooms, wo sich die Fans austauschen konnten. Ich habe mich dann dort mit ihnen unterhalten. Jetzt gibt es schon zu viele Plattformen online. Ich habe acht verschiedene laufen; das ist eine Menge. Wir werden das irgendwann runterfahren auf eine Handvoll.“
Diese Internet-Plattformen füllt Alex Band mit Leben – und neuen Ideen. Seit er sein eigenes Label hat, genießt und nützt er die Freiheit, sich selber zu vermarkten, und das macht er sehr kreativ. In seinem Online-Shop können die Fans sich Armkettchen kaufen mit verschiedenen Schmucksteinen, ein Kettchen für jeden Song auf seinem Album. Der Download-Code liegt dem Schmuckstück bei. Hunderttausende, sagt Alex, habe er weltweit bereits verkauft. „Du kannst zum Beispiel in einen Supermarkt in Amerika gehen, eine Armkette kaufen und damit auch die Musik. Das ist eine coole neue Art der Vermarktung – ich denke, dass wir ständig neue Ideen entwickeln müssen!“
Wenn Alex Band redet, ist er nicht zu bremsen, und schnell wird klar: Der Mann weiß, was er will und wo er hin will. Während des Gesprächs gestikuliert er ausgiebig mit den Händen; als sich die Gesprächszeit dem Ende zu neigt, meint er sogleich: „There’s no rush – keine Eile“. Dann erzählt er ohne den Anflug von Lampenfieber oder Hektik weiter. Wir erfahren, dass Alex es gerne ordentlich hat, dass es aber ziemlich schwierig ist, einen Tourbus sauber zu halten. Außerdem soll er in einer Art Rollenspiel für eine Radioshow mitwirken – der Junge hat schauspielerisches Talent und meistert die Sache im ersten Anlauf mit links. Kein Wunder: Alex ist der Sohn von Horrorfilm-Produzent Charles Band, hatte Auftritte in Filmen wie „Puppet Master“ oder auch „CSI NY“. Dann ist die Gesprächszeit endgültig um – draußen stehen schon die Gäste des Konzerts und warten auf den Einlass. Zurück bleiben noch einige Fragen wie die nach dem Grund für das Engagement des Sängers für die Organisation „Donate Life“, die sich für Organspenden einsetzt. Egal – schon im März 2011 kommt Alex Max Band wieder nach Deutschland: Auf Tour, denn das spürt man auch beim anschließenden Unplugged-Auftritt: Dieser Künstler hat Nachholbedarf nach jahrelanger Bühnenabstinenz. Die deutschen Fans dürfen sich also jetzt schon freuen.

He became famous as the singer of „The Calling“, a well-known US rock band: Alex Max Band is resuming his career after years of unwanted break – and this time the cradle of his success is Germany. Musiktipps24 met the singer just an hour before his radio concert for Radio7 in South Germany.
The first impression surprises – Alex Band (due to copyright restrictions he calls himself „Alex Max Band“ in Germany) doesn’t fit the cliché of a Hollywood rock star at all. Almost dainty, not too tall – and with very lively gestures he tells us about his past with „The Calling“, new strategies in music marketing and what connects him with Germany.
Alex likes the atmosphere at the concert location: „It’s just like a barn. I’m from Hollywood, so I don’t get to see many barns.“ He’s fascinated by the rustic ambience with wooden beams and walls covered with straw. „I’ve got to take some pictures for my family.“ The singer is already looking forward to the little intimate concert for just about 200 spectators. „When I’m playing big shows with thousands of people, there is always a big distance and barricades. I don’t like that. I would like to have everyone up in front of the stage, so that I can just reach out and grab them and sing to them.“ But after 15 years on stage – half of his life – the music professional surely got to know the other side of the business: Overzealous fans make him stagger and even try to rip his rings and necklaces off. „I always take off my jewellery before the concerts.“ Some artists may be annoyed by this – Alex simply seems to be amused. „Sometimes I put on cheap jewellery just to let them have it.“
Alex became known as front man of „The Calling“. Their greatest hit „Wherever you will go“ is eight years old but still gets airplay in radios all over the world. Actually „The Calling“ was not a real band at all, Alex admits. „When I was in the studio, I hired studio musicians, and when I went on tour I hired some guys and paid them a weekly salary. I think I had four different guitar players and three drummers.“ The only further member of the band, Aaron Kamin, didn’t even go on tour and preferred to work in the background. Now Alex started his new career officially as a solo artist – and still confuses people: „My last name is Band“, he laughs and seems to like the confusion he causes that way. Alex doesn’t miss a group of his own around him: „As a solo artist I truly can do everything I want and do it the way I want. It gives me a little more freedom.“
But it wasn’t always like that. After the end of „The Calling“, Band signed a record deal, but soon his label tried to drive him into a certain corner he didn’t fit into. He was asked to work with Akon or Timberland, to adapt his music to the prevailing taste. That was the point when Alex wanted to get out of the deal. „It took five years to get the album into the stores. The label didn’t want it and I had to fight to leave that record deal and I actually paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to leave and take the album with me.“ After this experience the singer launched his own label. Accidentally, Germany became the cradle of his second career. „It happened that a guy at EMI here in Germany loved the music, so the whole project started here, but now it’s spreading all around the world!“
It might sound unusual that a US singer is starting his career in Germany, but music isn’t the only thing that connects Alex with this country. „When I was eight years old, my mother moved to Germany; I have three brothers here.“ Linking business and private life is a great thing for Alex: „I’m very familiar with the culture here and the food and I’ve been all over the country.“ But the best for him is the dedication of the fans. „In these last five years, when I just disappeared, they waited – especially in Germany. And as soon as this music was released, they were here. That’s serious loyalty. That is one of the things I like most about Germany.“
But it is also Alex‘ own credit not to have been forgotten. Instead of just hanging around and twiddle his thumbs he made sure people kept him in mind. He was among the first musicians who used the internet and all the possibilities it has to offer, to stay in contact with his fans. „In these five years, even if I couldn’t sell music and couldn’t play shows, I was able to give away music. So I was constantly writing songs, giving them to the fans, keeping them up to date as much as I could. Back in the „Calling“ years there was no Myspace, Facebook or Twitter. Back then, we early started to create message boards online and places where people could talk. I would go in there and talk to them. Now there are too many places online. I have eight different ones running. It’s just a lot, but I think we will narrow these down to just a handful.“
And Alex is filling these internet platforms with life – and new ideas. Since he has been running his own label, he enjoys and uses the freedom of self-marketing – and he is doing this very creatively. Fans can order his bracelets in the online shop. These consist of different gems, each of them standing for one of Alex‘ songs. If you buy one, you get the download code for the song. Alex says he has already sold hundreds of thousands of these bracelets. „Now you can go into a store in America, for example, and you can see my music on the bracelet and you can buy it. It’s a cool new way of merchandising – I think we have to keep coming up with new things!“
When talking, Alex seems to be unstoppable, and soon you recognize: This man knows what he wants and where he wants to go. Whilst talking, he gesticulates extensively with his hands. And he doesn’t care when time is running out: „There’s no rush!“ Then he continues talking without a trace of stage fright or hurry. We come to know that Alex likes things to be tidy, but despite that, it is very difficult to keep a tour bus clean. Then he shall take part in a radio show – this guy has theatrical talent and easily manages the task. No wonder: Alex is the son of Charles Band, a well-known producer of horror films. Alex himself performed in some films like „Puppet Master“ or „CSI NY“. Then our interview time is finally over – outside the audience is already waiting for admittance. There are still some questions left, such as the reason for Alex‘ commitment to „Donate life“, an organization that cares for organ transplants. But that doesn’t matter: Alex will already be back on tour through Germany in March next year. You can feel it during the following unplugged session in the small „concert barn“: This artist has a great backlog after years off stage. He’s really keen on playing concerts. So watch out for Alex Max Band!
